Diabetes and Gum Problems

Periodontal disease (gum disease) has been proposed as the sixth most common complication of diabetes mellitus. People with Diabetes are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop periodontal disease, and those who do not know they have diabetes, or whose diabetes is not under control, are especially at risk.

You may experience more severe gum disease and at an earlier age. Gum disease can make it more difficult for you to manage blood sugar as periodontal bacteria can increase blood glucose levels.
